What do we know about God? How does He reveal Himself to us?

Songwriter Pat Barrett has a heart for knowing God more deeply. He wrote the song  as a way to sort out what he’d heard and been told about the character of God.

“I’ve heard a thousand stories… different stories. This group says You’re this way. Some people in the media may think You’re this way…”

What does God actually say about Himself? When Jesus taught us to pray, He started with, “Our Father.” Jesus showed us a God who was close, loving, holy, and joyful. His intimacy flew in the face of the religious people who didn’t want a father.

We can be that way too. In our quest to be justified, we want to God to be distant, severely judgmental, and a perfectionist as opposed to a father. God instead comes close and welcomes us with a disarming love.

Pat’s own heart has been changed by the song.

“It’s been a real healing song for me personally, for Tony [the co-writer] personally and as a community, as a church. Whether you had a great father or an absent one, God wants to be that place.”

Let God be your Father. He’s perfect and perfectly loves you.

“Oh, I’ve heard a thousand stories of what they think you’re like
But I’ve heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night
And you tell me that you’re pleased
And that I’m never alone

You’re a good, good Father
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am

Oh, and I’ve seen many searching for answers far and wide
But I know we’re all searching
For answers only you provide
‘Cause you know just what we need
Before we say a word

You’re a good, good Father
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am

Cause you are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us.”
