What is the power in prayer?

Stephen and Alex Kendrick grew up in a home centered by prayer, and it continues to mark everything they do. It began with parents who depended on God’s power.

“We saw incredible answers to prayer in their lives. Our dad launched a Christian school with no money and no resources, no locations but he felt like the Lord was leading him to do it. We just saw God answer one prayer after another to make that happen.”

It was no coincidence that the Kendrick brothers came to Sherwood Baptist Church, a place with a thriving prayer ministry. Stephen quotes the pastor,

“A church will never rise above its prayer ministry.”

Prayer needs to be the wind in the sails of everything we do in the church. It needs to be first base rather than third base, the steering wheel rather than the spare tire.

God led the Kendricks into film, though they had no background in film-making. Working on a tiny budget, without even knowing at first how to use the camera, Stephen and Alex followed God’s lead. Five films later, God is continuing to use their faithfulness for His purposes.

“The Lord was in it. He confirms when He is in something repeatedly.”

How does God bring confirmation as we pray and wait?

• Through His Holy Spirit.

• Through a peace.

• Through counsel.

• Through His Word.

• Through circumstances and open doors.

Stephen adds a last one – through the unity of the body. That unity comes from prayer.

God spoke to Stephen and Alex say, ‘call My people back to prayer.’ In Stephen’s words,

“Politics is never going to get it done. Religion is never going to get it done. Our nation needs a movement of God.”

We need God to step in as He did before the Great Awakening era. But the church in those days first had to unify, get humble, be broken before the Lord, repent, and begin to pray in unity. The hope for War Room is to birth a prayer movement in our church to seek God and put His ways first.

Stephen calls for patience.

“Sometimes it was twelve years of praying before some of those great awakenings happened.”

Change won’t come overnight, but if we repent and turn back to God, it will come.
