The church is a collection of people who are not perfect, but in process. On the Tuesday edition of Live the Promise guest host Bill Arnold talks with Rob Bentz about extending grace to those around us. Rob’s book is  .

Rob shares why authentic community is so challenging.

“I think ultimately the church in America has an underdeveloped understanding of what it means to be the church and how to live that out practically. As part of God’s church, I have a calling, responsibilities that God has given me… we all have this great equalizer called sin; that puts us on a level playing field. It’s only through Christ [that] we have an opportunity to walk out our faith and love people well. You’re not going to find the perfect church environment – bring your mess into the mess and let’s work on loving each other well, serving each other well.”

Rob addresses a question posed by a caller: what can we do to encourage authentic community in our churches?

• It starts with you.

“If you model that, if you can be honest and real about some challenges in your own faith journey, people tend to follow your level of authenticity.”

• Recognize that it takes humility to remain in a church family.

• Ask, what gift can I offer? Rob urges us to remember that no Christian is an island.

“There is a place for you.” Exercising your spiritual gift brings you into contact with others. Spiritual gifts by nature build up other believers – walking in your gifting means authentic community.

• Laugh together.

“Our joy really doesn’t come from our circumstances. It’s easier said than done but it is a challenge for us to consider each day.”

Rob lastly points to Jesus.

“Jesus surrounded Himself by a ragtag bunch of men, and we are the fruit of His efforts.” Don’t try to go it alone. Lean in, learn how to forgive, and trust God’s sanctifying work through other believers.
