Does the word snow conjure up thoughts that run the spectrum from love to dislike for you?  It does for me.  I love it when I have the day off and I can catch snowflakes falling from the sky or go sledding or build a snowman with my son.  I dislike it when I have to get to work and get stuck in the pile that was left at the end of my drive way.  I love it when I don’t have to go anywhere and can sit at a window with hot chocolate and watch it silently cover everything.   I dislike it when I have to be anywhere fast.  I love the first snowfall in November.  I am ready to say goodbye to snow by February.   The truth is at any given moment I can feel how I want to about snow.  It’s true of most things in our life.

One of the hardest things for us to do is manage our hearts.  Proverbs 4:23 says” Above everything else guard your heart, because from it flow the springs of life.”  We are tested and challenged to guard our heart in relationships, material things and most anything we give our energy to.  It seems easier to guard our heart when things are within our control, but when they are not in our control therein lays the struggle.  Instead of obsessing over things that are out of our control, we can focus in on our attitude, our heart and energy. Easier said than done, but we do have the ability to choose how we will handle the unexpected, even the unwanted with God’s help.

It may not be snow that we are facing; it may be illness, loss of a job, relationship struggles or a personal tragedy – all of which are hard to maneuver through.  Thankfully we do not walk through it alone.  God holds us.  Romans 8:31 says, “What, then, shall we say in response to this?  If God is for us, who can be against us?”  The thing to remember is like the snow, it’s only for a season.  Help us Lord to hold on to you through whatever we are walking through knowing you will lead us home.
