Myths such as “mothering is natural, easy, and instinctive” cause moms to feel like failures if they have questions or apprehensions in raising their kids.

Wife, author and mom of four Ruth Schwenk shares insight from her book Hoodwinked to help us identify the lies that moms believe and replace it with the truth.

Jo shares that one of her favorite myths is that which says:

“A good mother can do it all at once, and not just do it all, but do it all at once.”

That is completely false, and yet it’s something that most everyone struggles with at some point or another. Ruth loves to be a part of everything, however she had to come to grips with the reality that there are seasons of motherhood.

“…when my children were really little, oh my word, I really didn’t have a lot of time to do some of those extra things.  And as my children get older I can be a part of some things that maybe I couldn’t be a part of back then, so I think that is the biggest thing to recognize is that there are different seasons of motherhood.  And just because you can’t do something right now doesn’t mean that you can never do it.

Those seasons don’t last forever and so it’s important to get the most out of each season while you’re living in them.

“I think ‘oh my word where did my little babies go? That time went so fast!’  And I’m not holding a baby anymore, my youngest is six and we’re in a completely different stage than we were five years ago…”

The time goes by quickly, and so mothers must take hold of the different seasons to make sure that no moments get missed.
