There was a time in Pastor Randy Frazee’s life when he struggled with unbelief in regards to aspects of Christianity that most people would consider to be foundational.
“I found myself confessing to God, ‘I don’t believe in heaven.’”
The first step to recovering from his unbelief was to admit that he had doubts. It was through this confession of his struggle with unbelief that God ultimately drew Randy closer to Himself.
“Jesus led me on a spiritual journey to discovering what the Bible said and really anchoring my mind and my heart in what God had in mind and as I did that, I was able to emerge over all these years with a greater sense of hope.”
Randy still struggles with doubt at times, but He has found freedom from fear and unbelief in God.
“I won’t lie and say that I’m 100% there. I’m a little nervous about the future but I’m 80% there and the 80% that God has gotten me to has filled my heart with hope.”
What we get wrong about unbelief.
Unbelief is not always a bad thing. It’s OK to have doubts, many Christians do. Doubt is especially common in young people and many are leaving the church today because they are discovering that people in the church are often not equipped to answer their legitimate questions and concerns.
Each young person must go through the process of making their faith their own. The process is accompanied by many struggles, confusion, and doubt. Many young people harbor their unbelief in their hearts for fear of hurting their parent’s feelings and this leads to abandonment of the faith completely.
“So our places (churches) need to be a place where you not only confess what you believe but it needs to be a safe place where you can confess what you don’t believe.”
As parents, if we see our children struggling with unbelief, don’t panic.
“Our children’s faith is their faith and they have to own it. Their faith is a journey just like yours, let them take their own journey under your safe, gracious guidance.”
