God commanded the prophet Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman.

Author Jennifer Rothschild has taken a particular interest in the book of Hosea. She wrote a Bible study based on the living parable about God’s never-failing love for us.

As Christians, we often live contrary to our true identity, and we don’t even realize it.

“We all do that, we don’t live according to our identity and when we don’t know who God is, we don’t know who we are.”

We are all chosen and loved by God, but do we actually live like it? Often, we don’t. At times, we all make the mistake of wandering off to lesser things trying to distinguish ourselves apart from God.

God commands Hosea to marry the prostitute Homer despite her unfaithfulness. This marriage was intended to be a representation of the love God has shown us, despite our unfaithfulness to Him.

“Your life is going to be a word picture of my love for my people that break my heart.”

Jennifer admits that when she read the book of Hosea she judged Gomer for forfeiting the free love Hosea gave to her, for the cheap love of promiscuity and lust. However, she soon came to a startling realization.

“The more I studied Hosea the more I realized that I just like was Gomer.”

Jennifer realized that even though she wasn’t blatantly promiscuous, she was just as unfaithful as Gomer was, when it came to following Christ.

“We are chosen in love, that is our identity, but Israel and Gomer didn’t always live like they were the chosen and loved.”

In the same way, we don’t always live like we are chosen and loved. We lose our identity that we have in Christ and we wander off. Every time we sin against God we are acting contrary to our true identity as children of God.
