This weekend commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the journey to independence.

Peter Muhlenberg was a pastor and military man. In late 1775, when George Washington personally requested that he raise up and lead the 8th Virginia Regiment for the Continental army, Muhlenberg agreed.

On January 21st 1776, Pastor Muhlenberg stood before his Lutheran congregation in Woodstock, Virginia, and preached from Ecclesiastes 3.

Listen to hear what happened when he reached Ecclesiastes 3:8.

The Patriot Pastor

At the end of the war, Muhlenberg was brevetted to major general and elected Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He went on to serve in the Senate and in the House of Representatives.

It is to these men, and the many that followed them that we have to thank today for freedom.  We are grateful to those that rose up to fight for freedom, and those who protect those same freedoms today.
