Just because health care is a government mandate doesn’t mean we are taking care of ourselves. One sign of that is the resurgence of diseases once thought contained by immunizations. On the next Connecting Faith, we’ll talk with pediatrician and Christian Medical Association member Dr. Julie Griffin about vaccines, childhood diseases, summer health tips and more.

Dr. Julie Griffin is board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics, and currently practices at Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas in Coffeyville, Kansas. She graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and completed her post graduate education at the University of Kentucky, Chandler Medical Center. She is currently pursuing a master’s in public health. She worked with Global Health Outreach in Honduras prior to entering medical school and is a certified minister with the Assemblies of God.

We dig into the high profile headline issue of vaccines and look at what happened in California recently regarding measles. Dr. Julie explains how one individual who wasn’t vaccinated was able to start a chain of measles infections in Disneyland that led to scores of new cases of the age-old disease.

Those who are speaking out against government-mandated vaccinations are doing so from the perspective of wanting to reserve the right to choose. Yet, for vaccines to be collectively effective, individuals need to bear the responsibility to obtain the vaccination. As people of faith, what’s the right way to look at this potential tricky issue?

“Superbugs” have been another headline grabbing medical story. Are viruses and bacteria learning how to mutate and outsmart the medical community?

Just in time for the summer’s hottest days, Dr. Julie tackles smart preparation for being in the sun and hydrating effectively.

It’s relevant medical wisdom from the unique perspective of our faith on this latest Connecting Faith!
