What does it mean to be a good person? What’s the standard for being good?

Pastor and professor Gary Tyra tackles these questions, and provides a clear framework for making everyday moral choices from a Christian perspective. On this Connecting Faith, we learn how to honor God in our daily decisions as we talk about Dr. Tyra’s book  .

We talk a lot about following our instincts, yet the Bible says it’s not a good thing at all to make decisions about right and wrong based on what we feel.

Dr. Gary takes the conversation back to the origin of ethics in the Greek era of history. People started asking, “What is the ‘good life’?” And, “What does it mean to really be a good person?”

As Christians, we have great assistance with these momentous questions, found in the Bible.

The students that Dr. Gary interacts with daily have become more relativistic in their approach to ethics. Millennials are being more shaped and influenced by pop culture than any generation before them. Yet it’s not just our young people, culture has been impacting all of us.

The question we need to come back to is this – are we really striving to honor the heart of God when we are making decisions? Perhaps some will wonder why it matters. Dr. Tyra points to the words of the great CS Lewis. He noted that every moral decision we make essentially creates our destiny.

We are given a tremendous example of how to make decisions well in the person of Jesus, and we can gain inspiration from how He went about this aspect of His life. How can we apply His great faithfulness to our own walk? There can be extreme approaches to decision making, yet Dr. Tyra says Jesus models the balanced approach for which we should aim.
