Being a strong leader starts with an intimate walk with God. On the Monday edition of Live the Promise pastor Pete Scazzero joins us to look at how to lead from a place of health.

What does leadership look like when we’re not caring for ourselves? Pete points to several effects.

• Doing things for other people that they can and should do for themselves.

• High levels of stress and anxiety.

• Strained relationships.

• Constant exhaustion.

Pete knows this firsthand – he was leading a church and running himself ragged. The turning point came when his own wife “quit” the church and decided to slow down her pace. Pete was jolted awake and realized God was trying to get his attention.

“I didn’t understand the importance of loving self in a healthy way. You can’t give what you don’t possess… unless you have a life that’s grounded, centered, and aware, you can’t give health away.”

In Pete’s book, , he shares the key – it’s about walking with God, about your inner life and character, not your level of output.

“It’s not just changing the way you act in a certain behavior; it’s who you are. My life is being with Jesus, out of which, I do for Jesus. My life is about a rhythm. I don’t get caught up in the craziness of people around me.”

What if we can’t stop the train? Pete says the train wreck will be worse if you don’t.

“You’ll always reap what you sow. Eventually cracks are going to form in the walls. Your life is going to lean to the right or the left [depending on your pillars].”

We need to start with a firm building foundation, a firm inner life fed by the Holy Spirit, if we want to live a life that truly matters.
