Less than 3% of churches in America are multi-ethnic. This complicates our ability to listen and speak to issues of race. Christian leaders are gathering this week in Memphis to engage in dialogue about race, faith, and the church. On the next Connecting Faith, we’ll hear a challenge to see the church representing every tribe, tongue, and nation from Trillia Newbell author of  .

Trillia recounted her love for diversity and how she came to understand it through her father’s teachings. He taught her about the civil rights movement, obtaining a healthy vision of diversity, and the overall importance of reaching out to others.

“A big part of it was my father teaching me how to love people”

She experienced discrimination as a young lady, by not being invited to certain social events and heard blatant remarks as she walked down the street. She mentioned it was not overt discrimination, but more of a ‘smile to your face but a stab in your back’.

Unfortunately, this social issue continues to exist in our churches, communities and all over the world today.  There have been a lot of reports revealed in the news lately, and Newbell expressed her thoughts on diversity;

“We see our nation is incredibly divided”

In this fast-paced culture, Trillia notes that news reports are often interpreted by readers too quickly and have resulted in a reactionary perspective. In order to engage in effective conversations, she suggested a few hindrances:

•  Conversations on social media can often lead to escalated debates. She adds that people may feel safer behind the computer, but to not consider it a healthy or helpful way to communicate.

•  We live in a ‘culture of reaction’ and getting information too quickly from news articles without waiting for the full story can misinform and damage one’s perspective

•  Fear.  She elaborated by explaining how “many people fear what they don’t know”

Having a Godly perspective on diversity and understanding of what Jesus did on the cross, can redefine how we look at others and give us with the ability to truly love people. One way to start, is by putting feet onto our faith and pursuing others for the kingdom of God with a sincere heart.
