What does it mean to be truly spiritual? Listen to Susie’s conversation with pastor and Faith Radio programmer Chip Ingram of Living on the Edge. They look at what it means to live a ‘Romans 12’ life, and why following Christ is more than a set of rules or rituals.

“What God really wants is not your religious performance… as a son or daughter who’s already forgiven in Christ, He wants you to offer all that you are and all that you have to Him. He wants your heart, lock, stock and barrel.”

How can we surrender to God? Chip calls us first to lay down our idols. He points to the story of Abraham and Isaac to show how good things can quickly become idols.

“Any idol will never deliver what it promises, but it will keep us from God’s good and best blessings.”

Then we renew our minds by letting God set our habits and patterns instead of following the patterns of the world. There are many things that can steer our patterns and thinking away from Christ, and Chip identifies some of them:

• Money
• Sex and intimacy
• Career
• Sports
• Our body/image

Chip is quick to point out that each of these things is not sinful by itself, but when it steals our joy or gives us purpose, it can drain our energy and take our eyes off of Christ. Our redemption is in Him, our purpose is in Him, and our aim each day needs to be a closer, deeper walk with Him. This is not just a matter of sanctification but one of mission. Chip encourages us to live for Christ.

“Those outside of us will never see God unless we walk in integrity” and deep love for one another, as Jesus calls us to do.
