What should a couple know before they decide to get married? Susie welcomes back husband and wife duo Bill and Pam Farrel to look at communication, preparing for marriage, and how to appreciate the differences between men and women. Bill and Pam’s new book is The Before-You-Marry Book of Questions.

If you’re in a serious relationship, or you know a couple that is prayerfully considering marriage, here are some things to consider:

Finances

  • How do we both handle money?
  • How much debt am I bringing into the marriage?
  • Do we have the ability to pay our bills together?
  • How hard are we willing to work to provide for the family?

Emotional stability

  • Am I trying to rescue this other person?
  • How well do we handle conflict?
  • When my significant other doesn’t do what I want, do I get angry?
  • Am I able to respond rather than react?

Intellect

  • Am I willing to grow in my skills and knowledge of how relationships work over time?
  • Am I willing to attend conferences or have a marriage mentor?

Vocation

  • Does we have a jobs or careers?
  • Are we advancing in our careers at the same rate?

Children

  • How many will we have?
  • Will one of us stay home to raise them?
  • Do we agree on how to discipline them?
  • How will we lead them spiritually?

Next to your decision to follow Christ, choosing the person you’ll marry is the biggest choice of your life.

Bill and Pam encourage prayer, communication, and counsel before you take the plunge, and God will lead you to the right course of action.
