The Academy Awards take place in a few weeks; listen as we review some of the Oscar-nominated movies and actors. We also talk about stories and themes coming out of Hollywood, the place of Christian films in pop culture, trends in movie making, and how to watch a movie responsibly.

According to film critic, theologian and author Drew Trotter, the top ten box office films of last year were either animated or action films – Hunger Games, Iron Man 3, etc. 6 of 9 nomination for this year’s Best Film are R-rated. So what do this year’s nominees tell us about the American mindset?

Gravity – We still love heroes. We crave survival and knowing we can overcome obstacles.

The Wolf of Wall Street – We love indulgence. We are corrupted by power

Philomena – Christians are called to forgive, and forgiveness sets us free

American Hustle – When we’ve wronged someone, it’s important to make restitution

We as people are compelled by stories that are timeless, authentic, and powerful. If a filmmaker doesn’t touch something within us that is inherently “right and true” then he’s lost us. What should we as Christians learn from Hollywood?

1. Storytelling is a great way to share the gospel. When Jesus wanted to reach the crowds, He told parables about everyday life and connected them to the Kingdom.

2. Non-Christian films can present Christian values. (Chariots of Fire) Remember that all truth is God’s truth, and we can affirm the truths in secular movies even though the overall message of the film may run against the Bible.

3. The movie is a powerful medium and needs to be approached with discernment. Do your research before going to see a movie and find out how much sex, violence, and language are included in the plot. Use godly wisdom and the Word of God to decide what to watch, and ask God for guidance. If your conscience is pricked by the content, choose not to see it.
